Upper Elementary Field Day |
Grades: 3rd, 4th and 5th
Field Day Time: 1:40pm- 3:40 pm |
Field Day Activities:
*Each game will last approximately 11 minutes. An air horn will sound when it is time to ‘switch’.
3-5 Popsicles/ Face Paint: Students will receive one popsicle at this station to enjoy while they wait for their face paint! Students may get a small design put on their hand or face. Only one per student because of timing purposes. Feel free to be creative but remember we have to get all students done in the 12 minutes.
Equipment: cups for water, table, chairs, paint, q-tips, paper towel, garbage can,
popsicles, scissors, coolers to keep popsicles cold
3-5 Water Balloon Toss: Give each student a partner and have them stand across from each other, facing each other. Hand the balloon to one partner. On the signal, have the student with the water balloon underhand toss it to their partner. If caught, have students back up 1 step. Repeat. Allow 1 balloon per group. The last students left, without breaking their balloon, WINS!
Equipment: 300 water balloons, water
3-5 Tug of War: Divide class into 2 teams.
Each team will go to one side of the rope.
At the signal, the students will pick up the rope and pull it.
The object is to pull the rope far enough that the cloth passes the cone.
Several games may be played.
Variations: You can choose different ways to split the students into teams.
Cone Cone Cone

Equipment: Tug of war rope, 3 cones
3-5 Soccer Dribble Relay: Divide the students into 5 teams. Students will need to do various dribble activities through the cones (Dribble out to the last cone and back, Weave through cones, etc). On the signal, the 1st person starts, upon return, they must high five the next person in line. Repeat until all students have gone (repeat untie time expires) .
Equipment : 25 cones, 5 soccer balls
3-5 Shoe Toss: Have student stand at the start line and loosen one shoe. One the signal, have students fling their shoe as far as possible, Farthest shoe wins. Variations: Only boys go, only girls go, whole class, etc.
Equipment: Sprayed start line
3-5 Giant Crab Soccer: Divide the class into two teams. Give one team jerseys to tell the difference between teams. Show each team which goal they are “scoring” in. Have all students get into crab position (Sit, lift bottoms, move with hands and feet.) This is the position they will play the game in. Have students spread out in playing area and give them Giant Ball and have students play “soccer’ in this crab position. After each point, reset and point out some good things you saw! BECAREFUL to make sure the ball does not fly away.
Equipment: 4 cones to make goals, 1 large soccer ball , 15 jerseys
3-5 TEAM PHOTO/ Word Maker/Rest: First you will be getting a few class photos. After you have taken a few photos- silly, serious, etc…..move onto word maker game:
Students will be divided into two groups. The students will have to lay down on the ground, and as a whole team, make their bodies into the letters and/or words that are called. The students are not individually making their bodies into the letters/words, but are working with their groups.
Suggested Letters: O, T, A, X, H (easier) and B, S, R, G (harder)
Equipment: Ipad to take pictures, letters to spell “FIELD DAY”
3-5 Keep On Swimming : Divide the class into 5 teams. Each team should stand in a circle in good personal space. Give each team a beach ball. On the signal, each team will try to keep their beach ball in the air as long as possible. Student may use any body part to hit the beach ball.Equipment: 6 beach balls (one for each team and an extra)
Giant Foot Race: Divide the class into 5 teams. Starting at the start line, the first person will put the giant feet on (you may want to demonstrate this), and walk as fast as they can to the cone on the other side. They will go around the cone and back to their team. Then the next person will go. Play a few rounds, continue until horn sounds.
Equipment: Sprayed start line, 5 cones, 5 sets of giant feet.
3-5 Giant Cup Stackers: Divide the students into 5 teams. Each line will start with a stack uf cups. The goal is for the class to build the tallest tower possible as a class on the other end. On the signal the first student in each line takes one cup from their stack and runs down, they will place the first cup wherever they want. They will run back and high five the next person. The next person will pick up another cup and run down and set their cup wherever they want. Each team will have someone going (so a total of five ppl at once.) They are working together to build one tall tower as a class. They can ONLY touch ONE cup per turn- so if the tower falls, they have to go without a cup in their hand, run down, and pick up ONE and put it where they want. They cannot touch more than one per turn. When the time is up, let them know how they did in comparison to other classes.
Equipment: 5 cones, 36 large cup stackers.
3-5 SPEED KICKBALL: Use your discretion on any of the rules as needed.
This is a play on kickball and meant to be speedy so that all students get a turn. We have played in gym for a few classes to practice the rules so that we all were on the same page. Two teams- one kicking, one fielding. Here are the rules we used:
3-5 Dunk Tank: Students will line up at the dunk tank and take turns throwing a ball to knock the person in (it will be a staff member or parent in the tank). Make sure they stay behind the designated area. Go through the line as many times as possible.
Equipment: Balls to throw, tape/chalk to mark of throwing line

- All students in the group must be part of the letter/word.
- For instance, if the letter “A” is called out, all students must be one the ground in the shape of the “A”. Make sure to note whether you want them to do a capital or lower case letter.
- If the word “CAT” is called out, then a couple of students would need to make the C, a couple more making the A, and the last few students making the T.
- The first group to successfully get their bodies in the correct position will get a point.
- After each letter/word, the students will stand up and get ready for a new challenge.

- Pitcher must change for every kicker.

- -after the ball is kicked, the kicker must run for their life, meaning, they must run all 3 bases and get to home plate before the outfielders tag home plate.
- outfielders may not “tag out” the runner (outfielding team must get the ball to home plate to get the kicker “out”
- Continue kicking line even if there are 3 outs, but keep track of all runs scored
- After entire kicking team has kicked, switch with fielding team. Repeat previous rules.
